Does laser hair removal hurt?

Short answer

Most clients describe laser hair removal as a light tap or a brief flash of warmth rather than sharp pain. At Nova Clinic the sapphire contact tip cools the skin during every pulse to between −5 °C and +5 °C, which makes a session considerably more comfortable than with older lasers. Numbing cream is almost never needed.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Why laser hair removal is felt at all

Laser hair removal works by deliberately heating the hair follicle. The 808nm diode laser sends a concentrated beam of light into the hair, the melanin in it absorbs that energy, and the follicle is permanently damaged as a result. That heat is the working principle, and heat is something you feel.

So the question is not whether heat is produced, but whether it lingers in your skin or not.

What the sapphire cooling changes

At Nova Clinic the handpiece carries a sapphire contact tip that cools the skin at the moment of the pulse, to between −5 °C and +5 °C. The energy goes to the follicle while your skin is chilled at the same time.

That is the difference between a treatment you sit through and one you barely notice. Clients usually compare the sensation to:

  • an elastic band tapping the skin very briefly
  • a short flash of warmth that is gone immediately
  • a light prickling on more sensitive zones

Which zones are more sensitive?

Sensitivity varies by zone, mostly because of how thin the skin is and how close the bone sits underneath.

Usually comfortableUsually more sensitive
Legs, arms, back, shouldersUpper lip and chin
Stomach, underarmsBikini line
Cheeks, neckZones directly over bone

Larger zones often feel calmer than small ones, because the device works in flowing passes there rather than as separate pulses on one spot.

Does it get easier as the course progresses?

Yes. After each session there is less hair left to absorb energy, which makes the following sessions noticeably more comfortable. The first session is generally the most noticeable, precisely because that is when the most hair is still present.

A full course averages 6 to 8 sessions. See how many sessions you need for the full schedule.

What you can do to make it easier

  • Shave 24 to 48 hours beforehand. Hair above the skin absorbs energy at the surface and that feels hotter. Waxing and epilating are not allowed — the laser needs the hair root.
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin. No cream, deodorant or perfume on the zone.
  • Avoid sun and sunbeds for four weeks before. Freshly tanned skin holds more melanin and reacts more strongly.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. It makes the skin more sensitive.
  • Tell us about your medication. Some drugs make skin light-sensitive. The full list is under preparation.

What you feel afterwards

Light redness and a feeling of warmth are normal and usually disappear within a few hours. In rare cases small blisters or temporary pigment changes can occur. Contact us if redness persists.

No hot showers, sauna or jacuzzi for the first 48 hours, and no intensive sport for the first 24. Use a high SPF daily on treated zones.

Is numbing needed?

For the large majority of clients, no. Sapphire cooling combined with adjustable parameters makes the treatment easy to tolerate without numbing cream. If you are very sensitive or unsure, raise it during the consultation — we will first treat a small test area so you know what to expect before we treat a full zone.
